With so many friends spread across the world, the art of communication has shifted. Where once we painted on cave walls, and grabbed wrists over a fire, we now send emojis, stylized photos, and videos to express our thoughts. It seems as though, despite the lack of physical contact, humans have entered another realm of exploration: the true art of communication.
Without the ability to speak directly with others, tone, inflection, smells of garlic or fresh cut grass, facial expressions…all of that 90% of non-verbal communication that is so important when interacting, just simply cannot be expressed in binary. This leads us to an age of creation: people want others to share in their stories, and thus, new ways of “saying” something such as with a picture, a post, or…by not replying, are imbedded into a new, almost tangible, network centered on the real estate of a cloud.
How interesting it is…the need for social interaction creates the framework and forces adaptability to support itself. I want to stay in touch with my friends and family, so I will use social media to stay connected. I try to use tailored avatars, different text modes, writing, and photography to share, in hopes that someone will want to pursue a social interaction. Based on the response and former relationship at the time of last conversation, we engage and start to explore the art of communication.
How funny it is…we limit our creativity by creating opportunities within parameters of usability, yet simultaneously open endless possibilities with the push to use this art form. Those who master this time of communication could be seen in future history books as those we read of from the Renaissance period. It is our personal determination to aspire.^^
